Barefoot Contessa likes to keep things simple

All of her professional tasks - shooting 20 episodes of Barefoot Contessa every year, testing recipes for her cookbooks, even "road-testing" meals for some (very lucky) friends - unfold at her Long Island, N.Y., home.

And with her trademark hearty chortle, ready smile, a vocal delivery with equal doses of natural warmth and "come hither-ness" and frequent recipe recitations that begin with "get out two sticks of butter," Garten makes Food Network viewers feel, well, right at home. If she doesn't like people as much as she likes food, she's one heck of an actress. Hers is the rare Hamptons abode where the hoi polloi might consider themselves welcome.

So the title of Garten's fifth book, Barefoot Contessa at Home, might seem a tad redundant. More telling is the subtitle, Everyday Recipes You'll Make Over and Over Again.

Viruses Removed From Drinking Water Using New UD Technology

University of Delaware researchers have developed an inexpensive, nonchlorine-based technology that can remove harmful microorganisms, including viruses, from drinking water.

UD's patented technology, developed jointly by researchers in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the College of Engineering, incorporates highly reactive iron in the filtering process to deliver a chemical "knock-out punch" to a host of notorious pathogens, from E. coli to rotavirus.

The new technology could dramatically improve the safety of drinking water around the globe, particularly in developing countries. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over a billion people--one-sixth of the world's population--lack access to safe water supplies.

Four billion cases of diarrheal disease occur worldwide every year, resulting in 1.8 million deaths, primarily infants and children in developing countries.

Food driver robbed in Greenwich

The victim told police he was delivering Chinese food to an address on Rose Avenue which turned out to be a vacant house.

A man came from the back of the house, however, and told the victim they'd have to go to another residence to get the money for the food, said police.

They went to an address on Willow Drive, about a block away, where the man produced what looked like a long, white metal pipe and threatened the victim, demanding his cash, police said.

The robbery took approximately $50 cash and the food and ran away, said police.

The victim was not injured.

The robber was described as a male in his mid-20s, approximately 5 feet, 7 inches tall, wearing a white hooded jacket.

Organic Baby Food Recalled Due To Contamination

Boston (eCanadaNow) - The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority has put out a recall order on a baby food product by the company Earth's Best.

The alert came from the FDA in the United States.

The recall occured in Singapore and was done just as a precaution. No sicknesses of any kind have been reported thus far to the FDA nor has there been a report on a date on the package to help identify the food.

The baby food is intended for babies ages 6 months and older and is sold in individual jars.

Botulism is a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.

Two owners hope tests reveal cause of dogs’ deaths

When Huntsville resident Robert Barley switched his dog's brand of food last week, he did it wanting to give her what he thought would be a healthier meal. However, soon after he began feeding Beneful dog food to Pearl, a 5-year-old German Shepherd/Labrador mix, she was dead. "I took her to the vet every year," Barley said. "I always kept her on her Heartworm medicine and flea medicine. "She never had anything negative. She was a healthy dog," He thought it might have just been a freak, isolated incident until he overheard a co-worker talking about how her dog had died suddenly, too. Janet Rambeck, also of Huntsville, started feeding her dog from a bag of Beneful she had bought just before Christmas at Wal-Mart. Rambeck said she had only fed Sooner, a 7-year-old Dachshund, the food on Friday, Jan.
