San Benito field source of E. coli

Investigators have traced contaminated spinach from last year's E. coli outbreak to a 50-acre plot in San Benito County, state Department of Health Services representatives said Tuesday.

It was the first official confirmation that the outbreak did not originate on a Monterey County farm. Until Tuesday, investigators had said since early October that the spinach came from either Monterey or San Benito county .

Investigators' lack of specificity has been a big concern for many Monterey County growers and industry representatives who have heard through the rumor mill for months that the ranches in question were in San Benito County, even while investigators continued to name Salinas Valley as a potential source.

"Essentially, I've had growers that are concerned that the Salinas Valley is suffering guilt by association," Bob Perkins, executive director of the Monterey County Farm Bureau, said five months ago.

The fat of the land

In recent years, here's what the scientific, medical and nutrition communities have said about dietary fats: Fats are bad for you; fats are good for you. Fats cause cancer; fats don't cause cancer. Fats cause weight gain; fats don't cause weight gain.

Get the picture?

Don't worry, we're here to help. Here's a guide to help clear up some of the confusion about fat and its effects on the human body.

What is fat?

Fat is oil.

Dietary fat has lots of destinations after it's eaten. Its primary use is to burn as fuel.

"Ironically, [fat] is a lightweight way to store fuel," said Dr. James Shoemaker of St. Louis University School of Medicine.

In addition to being stored or burned, fat acts as a shock absorber between organs, as insulation to regulate body temperature, as padding beneath the skin and as a means to dissolve vitamins.

Asda bosses 'kept in the dark' over out-of-date food on shelves

BOSSES at supermarket giant Asda were not kept informed about the scale of the problem of out-of-date goods left on its shelves, a court heard yesterday.

The chain is on trial accused of 54 charges of selling food past its sell-by date at its three Cardiff stores.

Over the course of the proceedings at Cardiff Magistrates' Court this week, the inner workings of the company, the country's second largest supermarket, have been laid bare.

Yesterday trading standards said Asda's system to prevent out-of-date food being sold on store shelves was not working.

Lee Reynolds, lawyer for trading standards, said the company's head office had failed to introduce checks to make sure it knew what was happening on its shop floors or to properly train its staff.

CDEP: TV-Watching Toddlers May Fatten into High-Density Waddlers

ORLANDO, March 2 -- Three-year-olds pack away 46 calories, mostly in sugar-laden snacks and drinks, for every hour they spend watching television, researchers here reported. This can add up.

Typically toddlers watching television -- either TV programs or videos -- are consuming extra servings of fruit juice or cookies and at the same time consuming less healthy foods such as vegetables and fresh fruit, and said Sonia Miller, a Harvard Medical School student. .

Indian government confident of wheat harvest to ease price hike

The Indian government is confident that the output of wheat this season will meet the target and ease the price hike, a senior official said Friday.

"Although official procurement of wheat through Food Corporation of India is yet to begin, the Indian government is confident of achieving the procurement target this year for buffer stocks," said Nanda Kumar, secretary of the Department of Food and Public Distribution in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.

Prices of several essential commodities including wheat have kept soaring in India in the past few months due to short supply, which added up to the inflation pressure.

The Indian government had allowed private companies to import grain at zero duty last year but the policy was valid till Wednesday.
