Firefighters turn up heat with tasty, low-cal food

Akron Fire Capt. Jim Case held up a thin slice of apple and winced. ``You can't dip this in ketchup. We used to have french fries around here.''

The lunch table at Akron Fire Station No. 2 has undergone some radical changes in the past few months.

Gone are the fries, the bread, the pasta.

In are broccoli, cauliflower, and yes, plates of sliced apples.

``They're killing me,'' Case teased.

I had the chance last week to spend some time at Station 2 with members of the crew who are taking part in the 911 Fitness Challenge, a 12-week national weight loss and fitness challenge for emergency response workers.

As we say goodbye to American Heart Month in February, and welcome National Nutrition Month in March, it seemed like the right time to visit with some people who are trying to lose weight and build up their muscle mass.

Coca-Cola and Kraft Foods Team with Boys and Girls Clubs To Create ...

ATLANTA - Studies by Arizona State University1 have shown that healthy habits are modeled and reinforced at home; yet many of todays parents often lack the time and resources needed to help their children make constructive choices. To help battle this challenge, Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), along with partners The Coca-Cola Company and Kraft Foods are making available free of charge the Triple Play Parents Game Plan, a parents guide to encourage young people to better understand nutrition, get them active and teach them to get along better in social and recreational situations.

Developed specifically for home use by parents everywhere, content for the Triple Play Parents Game Plan was adapted from BGCAs successful program called Triple Play: A Game Plan for the Mind, Body and Soul which takes a holistic approach to positively influence a childs wellbeing.

Data shows child poverty affects Tooele County less

Fewer Tooele County children are living below the poverty level, per capita, than in most other Utah counties, according to a new U.S. Census Bureau report.

The Housing and Household Economic Statistics Division, Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates, reports 10 percent of Tooele County's children, or 1,618 kids, were living under the poverty level in 2004. Statewide, 12.4 percent of all children live under the poverty level.

In 2004, the poverty level was $19,157 for a family of four (two adults, two children).

This poverty index, and other information regarding low-income families, is tracked by Salt Lake City-based Voices for Utah Children, which publishes annual reports for the media, the Legislature and libraries. The 70- to 80-page reports have been too cumbersome to carry in the past, said Terry Haven, Kids Count director.
