If on nutrition you're a whiz, you should ace this diet quiz

If you're like most Canadians, you consider yourself in the know when it comes to nutrition. According to the Canadian Council of Food and Nutrition, 87 per cent of Canadians say they have some knowledge of nutrition and one in four believe they're extremely well informed on the topic.

Despite our perceived nutrition expertise, many of us continue to be confused about dietary cholesterol, trans fats and concepts such as the glycemic index. It's no wonder when we're bombarded with an overwhelming amount of health information that's often conflicting.

Tomorrow is the start of National Nutrition Month, a time when dietitians across the country educate Canadians about the importance of making informed food choices and developing healthy eating habits.

To find out how much you really know about nutrition -- and to fine-tune your healthy-eating skills -- complete my short nutrition quiz.

DPWH vows to build Balagtas Interchange linking North Food ...

City of Malolos (27 February) -- Bulacan's proposed North Food Exchange (NFE) project is now assured of an interchange after the Department of Public Works and Highway (DPWH) commits to finance the Balagtas interchange that will provide exchange facilities for the agricultural and other commodity flows to and from Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon.

DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan in a meeting with officials in the province confirmed to allocate funds from the DPWH's budget. He also instructed the Regional Office to include the allocation in their 2008 and 2009 agency budget.

Estimated to cost a whooping P300-M, the said interchange will further expedite trade and commerce in a soon to rise show-window for local and global products in the country.

Governor Josie Dela Cruz said the construction of the Balagtas Interchange would provide convenience and accessibility, cause prevention of product wastage, and fast transporting of goods.

Websites Dangerous to Those with Eating Disorders

This week is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week. While thousands across the country are working to spread the message about the dangers of anorexia, bulimia and binge eating, there's another group out there working just as hard to stay thin.

Places like House of Thin and anorexics.net are just two of hundreds of websites supporting eating disorders, and the nearly one-percent of men and women who have them.

At 22, Jennifer Hanson's been down that road, starving herself and counting every last calorie. At her lowest, Jennifer's 5’8 frame dropped to 110 pounds. She had a body mass index below 18. A normal BMI for an adult is between 18 and 24.

"I started getting suicidal thoughts, I started doing laxatives and considered overdosing on pills," Jennifer said.

Asian grocery chain eyes aging shopping center

An Asian grocery chain has partnered with a local real estate developer to upgrade a 25-year-old corner of the city this year to the tune of an estimated $9 million. H-Mart, a New Jersey-based Asian market, in October purchased the corner space formerly occupied by Mervyn's department store. Mervyn's vacated the space in 2006 when the department store chain scaled back its Texas operations.H-Mart is working in tandem with the developers of the Asian North Town Center, the center's co-manager Richard Kang said. The pair is working to revamp the northwest corner of Old Denton Road and Trinity Mills Road in Carrollton.Kang introduced the Asian grocer to the city council, and the rest, as they say, is history.H-Mart's concept includes a food court featuring sushi, Korean and other Asian food, a specialty produce section and retails shops within the store itself, much like a shopping mall."It's going to be really nice looking," Kang said.

East LB Retail Growing

In the course of the past 10 to 15 years, the face of East Long Beach has changed considerably. In that time, the Long Beach Towne Center replaced the Naval Hospital and a large center anchored by Lowes and a Dennys replaced the Los Altos Drive-In Theater; the Vons Center on Ximeno Ave. and the Los Altos Center on Bellflower Blvd. were vastly upgraded and Farmers and Merchants Bank on Bellflower Blvd. built both a new branch and an additional office building, which will finally attract tenants once the current Petco store is removed. A few other centers have been either finished or expanded. Bixby Land Company, located in Newport Beach, has developed two properties. According to Vice President Greg Gilroy, the unofficially named Jetson Center at Los Coyotes Diagonal and Stearns has one tenant and 3,100 square feet for one or two new tenants.

5 hot finds

1) "The Biggest Loser Complete Calorie Counter" by Cheryl Forberg. I picked up this New York Times best-seller after hearing about it from my co-worker. Talk about a great way to keep up with your daily caloric intake. The 226-page book is a surefire resource for a listing of almost every food and drink we consume. It gives you a complete breakdown of your serving size, the amount of calories and grams of fat, sodium or sugar contained in each item. Now that's food for thought. Available at area bookstores.2) Answers.com. Want fast facts? this free Internet site has it all. If you've got the questions, they'll most likely have the answers. Not only can you get help on topics such as health, technology and business, the site is user-friendly and a great resource tool for school work. I've used it about a dozen times to help my son with his homework and special projects.

Smoke Out Delivery Dude for Fast Food

A knock on my door usually means one of two things: Either the Chinese food delivery man finally found my address, or my dealer wants to show off the latest Big Buddha strain he just got off some bro downtown for hella cheap. But unless Hermes is also sporting bloodshot eyes, I feel rude answering the door with a cloud billowing out of my living room. Smoking etiquette requires a sesh with my dealer for sure, but every time I'm handed my Kung Pao chicken, I wonder if a Trainwreck spliff would trounce my measly tip.

Once in a while, some mad dasher from Domino's will give my roomies and me a "Smells good in here" or a "Looks like I got here just in time." I used to just neglect the small talk for what it was worth, but I've come to understand how easy it is to include your meal ticket into the rotation.
