| Translate Spanish film fantasy into food on the 'Table'
The following review is by a reader who was given a cookbook from the Times. The included recipes were selected and prepared by the reader. On one winter Sunday, I thought I'd take a trip to Spain. I couldn't wait to listen to the Spanish language, flamenco music and, not to forget, taste the amazing cuisine. So, I packed my bag, wrapped myself in a warm coat and headed over to the local moviehouse to watch the new Spanish flick "Volver." OK, so not quite Spain, but close enough. Whenever a new Pedro Almodovar movie comes out, it's always exciting to see what the famous Spanish director has up his sleeve. The script, the dialogue, the actors, the melodrama, the unexpected twists -- everything that is uniquely Almodovar. And, let's not forget, the most important ingredient of his films, the authentic Spanish cuisine.

Japanese takeout restaurant and grocery store to open
Haruki East, a Japanese restaurant on Wayland Avenue, will open Haruki Express, a small takeout restaurant and Japanese grocery store, at 112 Waterman St. in about a month, said manager Kazu Kondo. The location, adjacent to Subway, will offer Japanese cuisine - mainly sushi - prepared on site for prices similar to those at the Wayland location, where a sushi entree costs about $10. There are no "definite" plans for food delivery, Kondo said, adding that he does not know how many people the location will be able to serve in a day. Ben Wong, owner of Thai restaurant Spice - located nearby at 110 Waterman St. - said he wasn't worried about competition because Thai and Japanese cuisine are different. "I like it," Wong said of the new Haruki site. The restaurant is owned by his friend, Haruki Kibe.
Family and a holy mole sauce is a winning recipe
Recently, Jose Marmolejo, 25, forgot to order the tortillas for Puebla Mexican Food, the takeout and delivery restaurant on First Ave. in the East Village where he has worked with his mother since he was 14. The place consists of a few tables and chairs, a counter to order from and a small kitchen behind the cooler full of American and Mexican sodas. Marmolejos uncharacteristic forgetfulness toward ordering supplies caused a rare rift between mother and son. He made an emergency run to a tortilla factory in Bushwick, Brooklyn, to remedy the situation fast and win his mothers forgiveness. Marmolejos mother, Irma Marin, 43, was born into poverty in the town of Santana, in the central Mexican state of Puebla that their restaurant is named after. She was one of 12 children.
Clamped but worth it
I was there. And it was great to be there. Not even the pain of finding my car clamped when I came out could dampen a great day. An extra 100 was a small price to pay for a memory like that. I will never forget Ireland v England in Croke Park last Saturday. It was a very emotional day, too. I was proud to be involved, and also proud to be a GAA man on that famous day. I have never heard Amhran na bhFiann sung with such gusto. It was incredible. But the respect that was shown to God Save The Queen was also something special. It made the hairs stand on the back of my head. There was a very strong sense among the attendance of being witness to and part of something historic. Rugby people I met were extremely complimentary about Croke Park, and I believe the decision to open up Croke Park has enhanced not diminished its status as a sporting arena.
Whole Foods Market set to open at end of next month
Whole Foods Market has announced March 29 as the opening date of its much-delayed location on E. Houston St. between Bowery and Chrystie St., beneath the Avalon Chrystie Place apartment complex. The Lower East Side store, originally scheduled to open in 2006, will be more than 80,000 square feet and will employ more than 650 workers. In addition to the natural and organic foods the chain is known for, the store will also feature a culinary center, natural cotton clothing and a line of body products. But, much to the relief of many nearby small businesses, it will not be selling alcohol. Whole Foods was planning to open a wine store in conjunction with its Lower East Side location, but the State Liquor Authority has twice unanimously voted against its application for a liquor license.
Food Fight, Who Will Win Out in the Grocery Battle?
Dominick's announced on Friday that they will be shutting 14 stores in the area, leaving approximately 600 people without work. The grocery store, owned by Safeway, is not necessarily cutting back. They indicated they are cutting the stores that aren't performing in the hopes that it will boost their efforts for expansion. According to Crain's, the company has closed nearly 20 stores in the past five years. Jewel Osco, on the other hand, is in the middle of a big roll out in the area. One issue with declining sales in the grocery store market has been the growth of big box stores and their introduction of more and more grocery items. The surge in popularity of organic food has also taken a dent out of the more traditional supermarket. As a traditional grocery store, Dominick's seems to be in the best position to capitalize on the organic food market.
