Southern tempting

When Wanda Carwile tried to decide which Paula Deen dish to make and share at a recipe lunch, she was overwhelmed with options.

Thats because Deen, who originally started the Bag Lady catering business in Savannah, Ga., moved into home-style bag lunches and then to a popular restaurant, The Lady & Sons. She followed that success with a succession of cookbooks, a magazine and a television show on the Food Network.

Carwile couldnt make up her mind, but she finally decided to combine two recipes for one large, colorful platter. Her combination impressed the several dozen women attending this Deen recipe fest at Crawford Gifts on the square in Athens.

It was no ordinary meatloaf, and thats why Carwile selected it.

This Cheeseburger Meatloaf and Sauce doesnt include regular ingredients like eggs or tomato paste, she said.

Fizzy logic over cola and chips in 5-a-day diet plan

ALMOST one in 10 parents in Britain believe chips, crisps and fizzy fruit drinks count as part of the recommended five-a-day' health campaign.

A total of 9% of parents think such unhealthy foods are amongst the list of fruit or vegetables we should take each day.

And an overwhelming 82% of parents regularly feed their children ready meals and fast food, a survey by the makers of Florida Grapefruit claims.

Neville's food bill amended in Senate committee

SANTA FE — A bill originally designed to help businesses that sell bottled water, ice and ground coffee could end up taking a bite out of future city and county budgets.

Senate Bill 530 by Steve Neville, R-Aztec, was amended in the Senate Finance Committee to alter the "hold harmless" provisions in a 2004 bill that removed the gross receipts tax from food and medical services. Under that provision, the state Tax and Revenue Department reimburses local governments an amount equal to what they would have received had the tax still existed.

The amendment would freeze hold harmless distributions at the tax rate in place on Jan. 1, 2007.

Sen. John Arthur Smith, D-Deming, who is co-chairman of the Finance Committee, said cities and municipalities have increased their gross receipts tax on other items to hike the reimbursement they receive from the state in the hold harmless money.

Starving the beast: How to avoid Archer Daniels Midland

Responding to my latest critique of Archer Daniels Midland and its business practices, a reader writes in to ask, "If I want to stop supporting ADM when grocery shopping, is there a list somewhere of what products to avoid buying?"

That's a great question. The short answer is, the best way to stiff ADM is to avoid processed fare and stick to actual food: fresh produce, dried beans, grains, rice, etc. If you're a meat eater, you'll have to stick to free-range, grass-finished products. ADM is a huge supplier of livestock feed and distiller's grains, a byproduct from the ethanol process that will be finding its way more and more the livestock food chain as the price of corn rises.

Now, not everyone has the time or cash to avoid processed fare. For those folks, refusing to support ADM is extremely difficult -- perhaps impossible.

Consumers Unable to Name Products Launched in 2006

Traditional media still dominates recognition and purchasing behaviour; Digital media is emerging as influencing factor with younger consumers and early adopters.

Boston, MA, USA, March 2, 2007 -- 81% of consumers are unable to name new products launched in 2006

Despite the fact that advertising spending was up from $271 billion in 2005 to $285 billion in 2006(a), 81 percent of consumers could not name one of the Top 50 new products launched in 2006, an all-time high for lack of recognition--up from 57 percent the previous year, according to the annual Schneider/Stagnito Communications/IRI Most Memorable New Product Launch Survey. "Relying on advertising alone for new product launches simply isn't working," said Joan Schneider, author of New Product Launch: 10 Proven Strategies.
