Monday Newspaper Review - Irish Business News and International ...
The Irish Independent reports that Ryanair has called on the Aviation Regulator to demand more information on the logic behind the Dublin Airport Authority's 1.8bn development plan. The call was made last week at an information meeting between aviation regulator Cathal Guiomard and airlines. Mr Guiomard is currently deciding whether the DAA's development plan merits an increase in airport charges before 2009. At the meeting, Ryanair's head of regulatory affairs Jim Callaghan said the DAA's case for a large second terminal was based on passenger predictions which Ryanair did not have access to and could not evaluate. The DAA's figures show that there is a massive peak in passengers in the early morning each day, with this trend set to continue in the coming years.
Is the US Killing African Farmers?
Terry Steinhour and his wife Phyllis farm about 650 acres in Springfield, Illinois, the heart of corn-producing country. The Steinhours’ are well-respected in their central Illinois community, and Terry is active with his church and the Illinois Farm Bureau. During the last six months, Terry has also been involved and vocal about reforming US farm policy. "It should address the needs of family farmers, not industrial-sized farms," he said. In July of 2006, Terry’s views on US farm policy began to broaden when he went to West Africa with Oxfam America, an international development agency. Terry traveled with four other farmers to Senegal and Mali and met with African farmers and public officials to discuss the impact American farm policies have on the rest of the world.
Meatloaf has a Mexican flair
Cynthia Lehr of Tequesta, Fla., used to have a recipe for Mexican Meatloaf and has had trouble finding another one she likes as much.Madeline Fossey of Cape May, N.J., sent a recipe for a Mexican-style meatloaf that she and her family really enjoy. This meatloaf is a cinch to prepare and quite delicious. While I tested the recipe using all ground beef, ground turkey or a mixture of the two could be substituted for a more healthful alternative.I recommend serving it with mashed potatoes or Spanish rice and a green vegetable. You will have a tasty twist on an old-fashioned comfort food in no time.Mexican Meatloaf1 1/2 pounds ground beef or ground turkeyOne 6.8-ounce package Spanish rice1 egg, lightly beatenOne 14.5-ounce can diced tomatoes with jalapeñosOne 8-ounce package shredded Mexican four-cheese blend (divided use)1 or 2 jalapeño peppers, minced (optional)Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
KoKo's pan-Latin menu is at its best when it's all over the map.
A sopao is a thick Puerto Rican stew. I wish I could be more precise, but it's one of those dishes that seems to vary with every recipe: One requires andouille and Parmesan cheese, another peas and smoked ham. I'd say chicken, rice and tomatoes, at least, are a given, but then I'd probably get a half-dozen letters telling me otherwise. Even calling asopao a thick Puerto Rican stew might be too definitive. Sometimes it's described as a soup, sometimes as a gumbo. There are Cuban and Dominican versions, too. At KoKo asopao is chicken, chorizo, green olives, capers, tomato and saffron served over rice. It's hearty nearly as thick as gumbo but the olives and capers give it a welcome salt-and-vinegar kick. Had I not been starving already (owing to a planning oversight that in a minute I'll try to pass off as a stroke of restaurant-reviewer genius), I still would have cleaned my plate.
Fast Food Part 1 (Paper for Eng213x)
A tax has been proposed in August 2006 comparing health facts with cigarettes. On every corner there is a McDonalds or a Burger King. Should those companies not be allowed in our schools? “FAST foods, processed snacks and sugary drinks can cause as much ill health as cigarettes, and should be taxed like tobacco and banned from schools and public institutions, obesity experts say."(Julie Robotham) In Australia, “They advocate strict physical activity rules for school students, a ban on all heavily processed fast foods and snacks from public schools and hospitals, unambiguous color-coded labels to denote nutritional quality, taxation for unhealthy products balanced with subsidies for fresh foods, and prohibition of all food marketing aimed at children." (Julie Robotham) This seems like an extreme action being taken toward ridding our system of unhealthy food but those same companies put out labels with calorie and food content and a separate menu of healthier options.
