'Chow Fun' workshop offers advice on how to eat healtier with ...
Some people think Asian cuisine is healthier than American food, but "this is not true if you don't eat Asian food properly," said Judy Lam from the nutrition department Thursday night at "Chow Fun," a workshop on Asian food and nutrition. The event, attended by 40 students, was organized by Campus Unions and sponsored by Asian Pacific Culture Week, according to the Campus Unions website. Lam opened the workshop, giving a short lecture about Asian food and its nutritional value. During the lecture, Lam discussed the nutritional values of commonly consumed Asian food, including calorie count, sodium, fat and other relevant information. Some students were surprised to find that bubble tea has approximately 316 calories for 16 ounces, including the tapioca balls.
Triumph over empire
At 90 years of age, The Helena May still has the panache to keep up with modern Hong Kong. Vaudine England tells her story Countless people have driven down Garden Road past an old colonial pile and never known what it was. Getting inside The Helena May, however, and discovering its great library and excellent dining is like finding the sexy underwear beneath a starched crinoline. Similar contrasts prevailed at the recent 90th birthday party of The Helena May. Young girls in pink tutus performed to tinkly music, and club grandees wore feathered purple hats and frumpy florals. Was this an outdated church fete which had got lost somewhere between England's southern counties and the exotic East? But a glance around the crowded, high-ceilinged lounge was reassuring. Here were Hong Kong's leading professionals, female and male, Chinese and all sorts of "others." Good food and cheerful ambience distinguish this unusual club of the colonial era, now thriving in modern Hong Kong.
Meatloaf, Mexican style
Cynthia Lehr of Tequesta, Fla., used to have a recipe for Mexican Meatloaf and has had trouble finding another one she likes as much. Madeline Fossey of Cape May, N.J., sent a recipe for a Mexican-style meatloaf that she and her family really enjoy. This meatloaf is a cinch to prepare and quite delicious. While I tested the recipe using all ground beef, ground turkey or a mixture of the two could be substituted for a more healthful alternative. I recommend serving it with mashed potatoes or Spanish rice and a green vegetable. You will have a tasty twist on an old-fashioned comfort food in no time. MEXICAN MEATLOAF 1 1/2 pounds ground beef or ground turkey one 6.8-ounce package Spanish rice 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 14.5-ounce can diced tomatoes with jalapeos one 8-ounce package shredded Mexican four-cheese blend (divided use) 1 or 2 jalapeo peppers, minced (optional) Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
We're soaking it all up
There are some television series you can sink into the way you would a warm bubble bath. Desperate Housewives, back on TV2, (Mondays, 8.30pm) has reached that stage of utter reliability. Any fears that the writers would run out of steam vanished with an array of wild new plot twists, which again leave you with the old question: how do they dream this stuff up? For instance, here is handsome Mike the plumber, in that old melodramatic staple, the indefinite coma. He's been like it for six months, and silly Susan has been visiting him and tending to him relentlessly in the hospital, and before you can even begin to worry that this will soon grow tedious, the producers send in Dougray Scott, playing a debonair new character, Ian, whereupon most women viewers will have vowed to watch this series in its entirety, however bad it may get.
