Snack packs work OK, but only if healthful

Have you ever had the munchies and wished for a little something to snack on without blowing your day's worth of calories? One of the hot new trends in food marketing is the 100-calorie snack pack. In today's world of super-sized everything, it's a nice option to have the math done for you.

If you are portion-control challenged and short on time, you may opt for this convenience. Rather than bringing home the big bag of chips that offers no stopping point once it's opened, you get a fixed number of snacks already pre-portioned for you into 100-calorie packages - assuming you can stop after eating only one package. But 100 calories multiplied by many snack attacks, and portion control is lost.

In addition to chips, you'll find cookies, crackers, popcorn, yogurt and even soft drinks available in these smaller sizes.

Wild Oats buyout a natural move

IT'S easy enough to bemoan the acquisition of Boulder, Colo.- based Wild Oats Markets by Texas-based Whole Foods as another case of a smaller company unable to cope with outside competition.

In fact, however, the merger of two leaders in the natural-foods market strengthens a trend that not only offers a healthier food supply to American tables but a fairer financial return to farmers and ranchers in the bargain.

After World War II, chain stores crowded out the "mom and pop" corner markets. These giant retailers were in turn supplied by a relative handful of food processors - and farmers often received low prices. The food was then often highly processed, losing much of its natural nutrition while jumping in price. A good example is the nation's meat supply, with most poultry and pork raised in giant facilities like the hog factories in eastern Colorado and shipped long distances.

Health Ministry Puts Fast Food Under Close Scrutiny

BATU PAHAT, Feb 20 (Bernama) -- The Health Ministry will meet non-governmental organisation (NGO) representatives to work on a campaign to educate the public on the pros and cons of fast food. Its Minister Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek said the meeting will be held immediately after the Chinese New Year holiday as the ministry was concerned with the current lifestyle of Malaysians and their fast food eating habits. He said the ministry welcomed the call made by the NGOs, particularly the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association and the Penang Consumers Association, to stop fast food advertisements in the local media. "A meeting will be held to find the best method to educate the public to avoid fast food consumption at the early age," he told reporters after a Chinese New Year Celebration, organised by Batu Pahat MCA, here last night.

Plant-Derived Omega-3s May Benefit Bone Health

27/02/07 Plant-based omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) may have a protective effect on bone health, according to a team of Penn State researchers who carried out the first controlled diet study of these fatty acids contained in such foods as flaxseed and walnuts.

Normally, most of the omega-3 fatty acids in the diet are plant-derived and come mainly from soybean and canola oil. Other sources are flaxseed, flaxseed oil, walnuts and walnut oil. Smaller amounts also come from marine sources, mainly fish, but also algae. Omega-3s are thought to have an anti-inflammatory effect and may play an important part in heart and bone health.

"The unique thing about this study is that we know exactly what the participants ate because we closely controlled their food," says Dr. Rebecca Corwin, associate professor of nutrition.
