Super plans to close Machon, eliminate 45 school jobs

The Machon School on Burpee Road in Swampscott will be closed next fall if Superintendent Dr. Matthew H. Malone prevails but he won’t win without a fight, parents and neighbors of the school vow.

In addition, Malone proposes to eliminate 24 positions through the school system, including the central office, and eliminate all 21 positions at the Machon School.

In a written statement issued at 2:45 p.m. Friday, March 2, Malone said closing Machon will cause "the smallest increase in class sizes, by approximately 5.27 additional students per classroom, among the other three elementary schools.

"Thus, although this decision is difficult to make, it is the most educationally sound for all the children and all our schools."

In his statement, Malone noted that the 2007-2008 school budget approved Feb.

Native Cooking

Winter has a way of making us daydream about luscious fruits and vegetables that we have in supply in warm weather. You can have anything you want at any time of year if you live where there are huge supermarkets and don't mind spending an arm and a leg for a lemon or something else not in season. We have those kinds of supermarkets where I live, and we are more than fortunate to have a family-owned farm market with excellent products in the next town over.

This is all great, but some prices are outrageous. For example, Jerusalem artichokes grow all around our property and are fairly reasonable in season at the stores. I needed some for a recipe recently; they were $6 a pound! I said, ''Fuhgeddaboudit.'' A few years ago, I could have just gone down into our cold cellar and found plenty of sunchokes, some butternut and a few onions, maybe a bunch of apples as well.

New data show fluticasone furoate nasal spray effectively treated ...

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) today announced the presentation of new data on fluticasone furoate nasal spray (FFNS), an enhanced affinity intranasal corticosteroid (INS) currently in development for use in the treatment of allergic rhinitis.

The data, presented today at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy & Immunology (AAAAI) in San Diego, are from three phase III clinical trials conducted in seasonal allergic rhinitis (commonly known as hay fever) and perennial allergic rhinitis which demonstrated efficacy in treating a range of nasal allergy symptoms, i.e. congestion, sneezing, itchy and runny nose (posters 1190, 908, 910, 906 and 254). The two studies in seasonal allergy demonstrated efficacy in improving ocular symptoms of burning/itching, redness and watering of the eyes.

Safety and Efficacy in Pediatric Cold Medicines

Following is a statement by Linda A. Suydam, D.P.A., president of the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), regarding the safety and efficacy of over-the-counter pediatric cough and cold medicines:

"Millions of Americans safely and effectively useover-the countercough and cold medicines every year - both for themselves and for their families. These medicines have been found safe and effective by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and are the same medicines that families have safely relied upon for decades to help relieve cough and cold symptoms and make their children feel better.

"OTC cough and cold remedies have a long history of safety when used according to the label. The most important information for all consumers is that OTC medicines are real medicines and must be used according to the label instructions at all times.
