Big D's Dogs delivers smiles, great food

Across the street from the Granada Theatre and nestled next door to a tattoo parlor, Big D's Dogs adds its own character to lower Greenville Avenue.

Inside, it feels like an old '50s malt shop with funky bar stools and old-time straw dispensers. Pictures of hot dog stands and eating contests hang above a large mirror that surrounds the restaurant, adding depth to the shop.

As I was trying to decide on a dog, I got a sense of the laid-back, personable atmosphere. The owner was in the process of making his homemade chili as he started a friendly conversation with me about how he got his start in the business.

You wouldn't expect a five-star chef from one of the top restaurants in Dallas to switch gears and open up a hot dog joint, but that's exactly what Don Breitkreutz did.

WHAT TO TELL YOUR PATIENTS New food guide ought to get you talking ...

Canada's Food Guide has been updated. "So what?" you might be thinking, "my patients aren't interested in changing their lifestyles." Physicians have a tough time talking about diet with their patients. Not only is it a delicate topic to bring up (everybody's sensitive about their weight), most clinicians simply don't have the time to get the message about healthy eating across to their patients. "There's good evidence that people whose physician talks to them about nutrition do better," says Dr Diane Finegood, a scientific director of nutrition at the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR). So while the new version of the 65-year-old food guide isn't going to set the world on fire, its simple, common sense advice is as good a place as any to get a conversation started about healthy food choices.

McDonald's: In the UK to stay

Britons and Americans may be "separated by a common language," as George Bernard Shaw quipped, but they increasingly are united in their fondness for fast food. So McDonald's has little to worry about even though Prince Charles was heard suggesting that the hamburger chain should be "banned." The House of Windsor has less power in contemporary Britain than the House of the Big Mac.

Charlie W. may diss Mickey D's, but his future subjects have warmed to the convenience of American-style fast food chains, which have blossomed in a country that 30 years ago was short on affordable and family-friendly eateries. Like showers, ice in soft drinks and "en suite" hotel rooms (bedrooms with their own baths), fast-food restaurants are a U.S. import that have become part of the British way of life.

The wonderful world of tea

Amidst the Pacific Northwest's gourmet coffee craze, restaurant professional Gretchen Twill brewed up an alternative beverage business.

"Coffee doesn't sit well with me, and I really got into tea," Twill said.

Tea, Twill said, not only poses more complexities than coffee, it rivals the wine industry's trend toward connoisseurship.

"Like wine, there are very subtle flavor nuances."

An avowed tea drinker, Twill, 38, steeped herself in the beverage's culture and history in a locale known more for its coffee. While living and managing restaurants in Costa Rica for several years, Twill frequented the country's numerous Chinese apothecary shops, unearthing a vast variety of traditional teas and herbs.

LPD-17 San Antonio Class: The USA's New Amphibious Ships (updated)

LPD-17 San Antonio Class amphibious assault support vessels are a new class of ship which is just entering service with the US Navy. Much like their predecessors, their mission is to embark, transport, land, and support elements of a US Marine Corps Landing Force. What changes are the capabilities and technologies incorporated to perform that mission, including internal technologies as well as accompanying platforms like the V-22 Osprey and Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle.

Navy sources note that the 9 scheduled ships of this class (reduced from 12) are slated to assume the functional duties of up to 41 previous ships. These include the USA's older LSD-36 USS Anchorage Class dock landing ships (all decommissioned as of 2004, LSD-36 and LSD-38 transferred to Taiwan) and its LPD-4 USS Austin Class ships (12 built and serving, LPD 14 Trenton now India's INS Jalashva).
