Right recipes make for healthier habits

One of the great tools coming from Dietitians of Canada in time for Nutrition Month in March is a new cookbook entitled Simply Great Food (Robert Rose).

The book was compiled by dietitians Patricia Chuey, Mary Sue Waisman and chef Eileen Campbell.

Dietitians from across the country contributed recipes for delicious and nutritious home-cooked meals for every day of the week -- not only because healthy eating is good for you, but also because it has been proven that families who prepare and eat meals together have healthier eating habits. Tandoori Haddock

Most supermarkets now carry tandoori paste. Find it in the ethnic food aisle where Indian and Asian sauces are displayed.

GourmetStation, Provider Of Upscale Gourmet Dinner Gifts Announces ...

GourmetStation, the leading national merchant for gourmet dinners, upscale prepared meals and fine gourmet food gifts delivered nationally, announced the introduction of a new wine program in partnership with Signature Wines. GourmetStation has been providing busy patrons with upscale dinner gifts since 2000 so it is only natural that their next new product line would be wine. Powered by California based Signature Wines, GourmetStation is introducing two new programs. First, shoppers may purchase wine a la carte that is paired specifically to GourmetStation international dinner menus. Exquisite wines are paired with popular entrees from GourmetStation's Parisian, Tuscan, Cajun & Fusion menu lines. Eagle Vale Shiraz, for example, is available and recommended to serve with lamb shank in rosemary mint sauce from GourmetStation's Parisian menu.

Dog food 'poison' traced

A contaminant that forced the withdrawal of dog food from supermarket shelves had been traced to an ingredient in five product lines, manufacturer AquaNutro said on Thursday.

"The supplier of that specific ingredient was immediately notified of the contaminated raw material and our company cancelled all orders from that supplier," said AquaNutro managing director Dirk van der Linde in a statement.

The presence of ethylene glycol was found after claims by dog owners and a veterinary surgeon in late 2006 and early 2007 that some AquaNutro products caused renal or kidney failure in dogs.

Extensive tests were initially negative until a detailed analysis tested positive for the contaminant, Van der Linde said.

The contaminant tested positive in a "limited number of batches" of some lines of dog food.

Authentic Polish Haggis

For the past couple of days I've been in Scotland recording interviews for a documentary on the health of the Scottish private sector to be broadcast on Radio 4 towards the end of March.

This took me to Macsween, haggis maker extraordinaire, just outside Edinburgh. In disinfected white Wellington boots and hygienic hairnet, I watched skilled workers manufacture their award-winning Caledonian delicacy. It is a third-generation family business, which turns over more than £2m a year and supplies Selfridges, Harrods and Tesco, among others.

Their classic haggis is made to a family recipe in the traditional way: the casing is ox intestine.

But for health and safety reasons, it's becoming harder and harder to find the authentic viscera. Ever since the BSE outbreak in Britain, domestic bovine intestines have been on the banned list.

Please welcome Lindsey Nair as she resurrects the Front Burner column, which has been dormant since the end of December, when reporter Beth Macy took a new job in the newsroom. Lindsey, formerly a police and court reporter for the newspaper, is looking forward to writing about food.

The Diet Detective: Choosing foods that fill you up without many ...

Calorie (or energy) density and nutrient density are interesting concepts frequently discussed by health experts in the last few years. The focus of these discussions has been on how to get better, simpler information to people attempting to make good food choices. But what do these terms mean, and why are they important?

WHAT IS CALORIE DENSITY?

Calorie (or energy) density refers to the number of calories per gram in a given food. The concept of looking at foods in terms of energy density was popularized by Barbara Rolls, a nutrition researcher from Pennsylvania State University. For example, just one gram of a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup has five calories, while one gram of celery has only one-fourth of a calorie. That means a 1.5-ounce Peanut Butter Cup contains the same number of calories as 60 ounces of celery.
