Potato soup uses coupon savings
Beverly Mills writes: It was my best coupon day ever. Thanks to those simple slips of paper clipped from the newspaper, my grocery savings (half the total bill!) locked up the cash register. The checkout clerk had to page the store manager to approve the sale. Grocery coupons can save you a bundle on food. But it's not always as simple as reaching for the scissors and the Sunday newspaper. Alicia and I did months of research on the ups and downs of couponing while writing our latest cookbook, Cheap. Fast. Good! (Workman, 2006). Some of our favorite tips: -You can save big when stores double (and sometimes triple) coupons. Many stores double only on certain days and for certain amounts, so watch the ads and plan accordingly. -Supermarkets coordinate frequently with manufacturers to put an item on sale the same week a coupon is offered.

Salmonella behind peanut-butter poisoning found
WASHINGTON - Federal inspectors found the strain of salmonella behind a recent food-poisoning outbreak at the ConAgra Foods Inc. plant that made the tainted peanut butter, the Food and Drug Administration said Thursday. Beyond the Sylvester, Ga., plant, the strain also has been isolated from open jars of the company's peanut butter and some of the 370 people who have fallen ill in the outbreak, the FDA said. ConAgra on Feb. 14 recalled all Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter made at the Georgia plant after federal health officials linked the product to an outbreak that began in August. The recall now includes all such products made since December 2005, the FDA said. "The fact that FDA found salmonella in the plant environment further suggests that the contamination likely took place prior to the product reaching consumers," the agency said in a statement.
Carl’s Jr Tempts Young and Hungry Guys with ‘Spicy’ Viral
Two years after its infamous Paris Hilton ads (briefly) smattered the airwaves and roused some controversy in 2005, fast-food chain Carl's Jr. is back with a new—albeit, slightly less controversial—ad campaign for its new Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. While inexorable socialite Paris is nowhere to be seen on this go-around, Carl's Jr is once again using the "sex sells" approach for its broadcast/online effort, this time enlisting the services of model/actress Ashley Hartman. Leveraging the TV promotions already in place, interactive agency of record Spacedog created a viral-focused microsite, Spicybuffalo.com, which is only the second one ever made for Carl's Jr. "Mendelsohn/Zien, the traditional agency that does all [Carl Jr's] TV and radio, had crafted a strategy that already sold through three spots," Wayne Robins, Spacedog's creative director, explains to ADOTAS.
