Recipes and remembrances

A quick breeze through these tempting books and you'll want to add more vegetables to your plate. Midwestern fare just does not offer the variety of produce -- or uses of it -- that you'll find in any of these books about East Asian foods. Most of the new cookbooks offer more than recipes. Rich tales of family and historical notes, as well as beautiful photos, make them as fun to read as they are to cook from. "Bento Box in the Heartland/ My Japanese Girlhood in Whitebread America/ A Food Memoir," by Linda Furiya (Seal Press, 308 pages, $15.95). This is a memoir of growing up Japanese in an Indiana farm community, where the author was the only Asian in her school. While her school friends ate bologna sandwiches (which she envied), her mother provided rice balls and chopsticks in the lunchbox.

India’s budget farm friendly, but problems remain

NEW DELHI - Indias federal budget this week doled out gifts aimed at giving a major boost to the ailing farm sector but failed to lay the ground for rural renewal capable of tackling supply shortages and crippling debt.

Large sums were earmarked for credit and to develop better seeds, but analysts said the budget on Wednesday would fail to release millions of farmers from poverty by raising farm productivity and better connecting producers to consumers.

The budget expanded loans to an extra 5 million farmers and raised the credit on offer by 18 percent to 2.25 trillion rupees ($50.8 billion). It aimed to irrigate an additional 2.4 million hectares of land and increased fertiliser subsidies.

Analysts said while the government recognised the sector -- which puts food on the tables of 115 million farming families -- is in distress, and acknowledged problems in the supply of foods like wheat and oilseeds, the measures just rehashed old ideas.

Wild Oats buyout a natural move

IT'S easy enough to bemoan the acquisition of Boulder, Colo.- based Wild Oats Markets by Texas-based Whole Foods as another case of a smaller company unable to cope with outside competition.

In fact, however, the merger of two leaders in the natural-foods market strengthens a trend that not only offers a healthier food supply to American tables but a fairer financial return to farmers and ranchers in the bargain.

After World War II, chain stores crowded out the "mom and pop" corner markets. These giant retailers were in turn supplied by a relative handful of food processors - and farmers often received low prices. The food was then often highly processed, losing much of its natural nutrition while jumping in price. A good example is the nation's meat supply, with most poultry and pork raised in giant facilities like the hog factories in eastern Colorado and shipped long distances.

Weight Cycling: How Does It Affect You?

The repeated loss of body weight followed by weight re-gain is called weight cycle. A small weight cycle is the loss and regain of up to ten lbs. Large weight cycles imply the loss and regain of fifty lbs or more.

Although specialists can`t say for sure how weight cycling is related to health problems, some studies showed a connection to high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and gallbladder disease. In time, women affected by weight cycle gain more weight compared to women who don`t, according to studies.

Binge eating was also associated to weight cycling for women. Some people who deal with weight cycling tend to feel depressed, although gaining weight is not a failure and may disappear when eating habits change.
