| Culver: Residents without power should seek shelter
Iowa Gov. Chet Culver walked into the National Guard Armory in Charles City Tuesday night and was greeted by the sight of 20 empty cots and blankets arranged neatly on the armory floor. It was in stark contrast to his last stop an hour earlier, at the Greene Community Center."I just came from Greene and they've been out (of power) since Saturday and the shelter is filling up," Culver said of the local emergency shelter there following last weekend's devastating winter storm. "Floyd, Butler and Tama counties are probably the worse hit areas I've seen. Just to fly in that Blackhawk (helicopter) and see all of the power poles down. We're talking 3,000-5,000 poles and hundreds of miles of lines down. They look just like toothpicks snapped off. The major transmission towers that often can withstand tornado-type winds are down, and in some cases snapped in half."The governor and Maj.
Botulism Risk From Earth's Best' Baby Food Product
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning to consumers about botulism risk connected to certain jars of Earth's Best baby food. The FDA warns that Organic 2 Apple Peach Barley Wholesome breakfast jars, which are available individually and in variety packs, are unsafe to eat. Jars contaminated with the botulism bacteria will not smell or look different from a safe product. Within 18-36 hours after eating, infants may not feed well, become constipated, and become listless and not move much. Often, they may drool from the mouth and have difficulty swallowing. If untreated, serious paralysis can develop and cause respiratory distress that may require hospitalization. The bacteria produces a toxin in the body that acts on the central nervous system and causes onset of symptoms within 10 days after eating.
Friday Night is Thai Night
Seattlest and Mrs. Seattlest have been getting take out on Friday nights at Chantanee Family Thai Restaurant in Bellevue for almost 3 years and have found no better Thai restaurant on the Eastside. From time to time, we eschew the styrofoam containers and eat our meal in the gold and purple themed interior. The service? Efficient and friendly. Mrs. Seattlest is the more adventurous of our duo and has eaten her way around most of the menu, finding some new favorites such as Heavenly Beef or the asparagus and prawns special. When I pressed her on her favorite dish, she reluctantly admitted that it was Chantanee Fried Rice. This dish combines just about every protein on the menu: pork, beef, chicken, prawns and calamari. For us, it's always old reliable – Chicken Panang Curry with 3 stars of spice (#12 at lunch and #39 at dinner).
A Day in the Life with ESPN
Cameron Indoor Stadium is dark. Just 18 hours ago, heckling students packed the bleachers to watch top-ranked Duke beat North Carolina and complete its first ever undefeated regular season. Now, though, Cameron is dark-except, that is, for a plethora of glaring technical lights and a large, green screen beneath the visitor's basket. The videographer adjusts his high-tech lens, the sound technician conducts microphone tests, and the interviewer practices her questions. It is 8 a.m. Monday morning, and an ESPN crew has taken Cameron hostage to shoot promotional film for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Should the Blue Devils reach the Final Four in Cleveland, ESPN will air the footage in preparation for the event. For the next seven hours, the 9,314 seat gym is the crew's lair.
A hedonistic dish worth the indulgence
Years ago, when I started to drink wine, white Burgundy was my first big love affair. Because I was, and still am, a food and wine hedonist, I indulged my passion. (California Chardonnay was not yet on my radar screen, and the boom in planting this grape all over the state was in its early stages.) Of course, in those halcyon days, I could afford to buy a lot of white Burgundy. Now I look at the prices, shake my head ruefully, and buy a good deal less. It is the smallest section of my wine cellar and, believe me, this is not for lack of desire. Chardonnay is the major grape in white Burgundy, but it is treated differently than in California. Even with the diversity of styles in California Chardonnays, you would never mistake them for white Burgundy. Terroir and weather are major factors in white Burgundy's taste profile, as are winemaking methods.

Late-night eats
La Casita is a mix of high quality Mexican food, combined with the American necessity of speed. Therefore, most of the food, like the burritos, is not the best tasting Mexican food you'll ever have, but they are incredibly satisfying. And the burritos are gigantic, for only $7. The restaurant is open until 4 a.m. Thursday through Sunday, and MTV Espanol is always on the telly. The free chips and salsa are fresh and delicious. Most other food gets pretty pricey-close to $10-but La Casita is the closest non-Taco Bell non-food-cart option to downtown. They also have cheap tacos. You can get three to four for around $5.
