| Safety and Efficacy in Pediatric Cold Medicines
Following is a statement by Linda A. Suydam, D.P.A., president of the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), regarding the safety and efficacy of over-the-counter pediatric cough and cold medicines: "Millions of Americans safely and effectively useover-the countercough and cold medicines every year - both for themselves and for their families. These medicines have been found safe and effective by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and are the same medicines that families have safely relied upon for decades to help relieve cough and cold symptoms and make their children feel better. "OTC cough and cold remedies have a long history of safety when used according to the label. The most important information for all consumers is that OTC medicines are real medicines and must be used according to the label instructions at all times.
Delicious memories
Each and every one of us can remember a food-focused time - a holiday dinner, an anniversary, a birthday party - that was special, either because it approached perfection or because something bizarre marked the occasion. That culinary history bears preserving. Author James Salter and his wife, Kay, a journalist and playwright, have done just that in a book that will inspire lovers of food to attend more closely to those times and places they enjoy good things to eat. Think of it as "foodie scrapbooking," and seriously consider picking up a copy of the Salters' recent "Life Is Meals - A Food Lover's Book of Days" to get you started. That said, you really can begin your own food journal with nothing more than the suggestion of how it's done. Be advised that to get it as right as these two have will take time.
A taste of home away from home
Quick: What does Boston taste like? Clam chowder? Baked beans? Every place has its native flavor. But sometimes it's not until you leave that you know what you'll miss. Just ask Denyce Wicht. A Bostonian for almost five years, she hails from Milwaukee, where much of the fare draws on the native food of German settlers. To celebrate her home state, Wicht recently hosted a "Wispride" night featuring bratwurst boiled in beer and browned on the grill, with sauerkraut and German potato salad, all washed down with one of Milwaukee's many regional brews. The spicy sausage makes Wicht think of summers at her family's Wisconsin farm with her father manning the grill. "Other people have hamburgers and hot dogs," says Wicht. "We have hamburgers and brats." Wicht isn't alone as a transplant with taste memories of home.

Nobu's Recipe for Success: Serve Food the Way Mother Makes It
Feb. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Slice 200 grams of raw yellowtail fillet into six, 4 millimeter-thick pieces; fan slices on plate, top with grated garlic and a slice of jalapeno chili; place coriander leaves at center and pour yuzu soy sauce around. Serve. Call it Nobu sashimi. That's how Nobuyuki Matsuhisa -- celebrity chef, cookbook author and actor (he played Japanese businessman Mr. Roboto in the 2002 ``Austin Powers Goldmember'') - - serves the dish at his Hong Kong outlet, which opened Dec. 24. ``It's how a mother would cook for her kid,'' Matsuhisa, 57, said in an interview at the restaurant in the Intercontinental Hotel in Kowloon. The ingredient that makes all the difference, he said, is ``kokoro,'' Japanese for heart. Matsuhisa needs a large heart to go around.
