Women's rugby to play in national championship game next month

The men's team wasn't in need of their services, so the girls approached the coaches and the four agreed to help them out.

"By some miracle we got in touch with these four guys," O'Keefe said. "It was a stroke of luck. We saw them leaving and asked for their help and they stayed for practice. I guess we're just a charming group of girls. It was a complete turn around and we're really excited about that."

The team had the money in its budget to pay the four coaches, but the coaches refused to be paid.

"They're doing it just because they love rugby," O'Keefe said. "They love being around it. They saw the potential that we had and they just genuinely wanted to help us out."

The team showed vast improvement in every aspect of the game this year under the guise of their new coaches.

The cheese dip stays the same

Jerry M. Haynie can't say for sure that Mexico Chiquito was the first Mexican restaurant in the Little Rock area but it's likely. Blackie Donnally and his wife moved up from Texas in 1935 and opened their “little Mexico" restaurant in the Protho Junction neighborhood of North Little Rock. Mrs. Donnally knew about food and brought the recipes, some of which are still in use. “Blackie was a front-end kind of person," Haynie said. “People knew him. Some of them called it ‘Blackie's Place.' "

The original restaurant is gone, replaced by a string of Mexico Chiquitos in the area. But, “We still have people who come in and remember the dirt floors at the original," Haynie said. He bought Mexico Chiquito in 1979 from the Ballentine family, which had bought it from the Donnallys and owned it for 16 years.

I wonder how tulip trees survive outside of Eden

The calendar says March, and once again the tulip tree out by my mailbox is acting like a 4-year-old girl, eager to throw off her jacket and dress herself for spring in bright, frilly attire. She's putting on her lavender-pink blooms already, not even pausing to consider that one freezing March night will leave them in ugly black tatters.

This happens every March, sometimes even in late February. The tulip tree is hungry for a taste of spring, so it dives in without thinking of the consequence. The consequence is that every year we watch the blooms die a horrid death just a day or two after their coming-out party. If the silly tree had only waited a couple of weeks, we could have enjoyed its finery for a good long time.

In the back yard, the fig trees are more practical.

McDonald's: Prince Charles in the dark

In Britain, he is known variously as the "prince of quacks" because of his demands that the British health system pay for visits to homeopathic practitioners, and the "nutty one" because of his attacks on "macho" London architects.

But to the rest of the world he's known as Prince Charles, the first in line to the British throne.

And it was from that elevated soap box that Oak Brook-based McDonald's Corp. became a target when he suggested banning the company's foods was a key to improving the diets of the citizens of the United Arab Emirates, which has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the world. McDonald's operates 44 restaurants there.

"Have you got anywhere with McDonald's? Have you tried getting it banned? That's the key," Charles was quoted as asking a nutritionist during a visit to a diabetes center in Abu Dhabi for the launch of a public health campaign.

PHOENIX - Arizona continues to spend a smaller share of its education dollars on direct classroom instruction than the national average.New figures released Thursday by the state Auditor General's Office show that in 2006 school districts spent an average o 58.3 cents of every dollar provided for education in the classroom. That includes teacher salaries, instructional supplies, textbooks, software and field trips.By comparison, the most recent national average is 61.5 cents. Auditor General Debbie Davenport also found that the Arizon figures actually slipped a tenth of a cent from the prior year, a figure that itself was a tenth of a cent less than 2004.The new figures come four years after Gov.
