Miracle's Paws for Pets gets non-profit status; new kennel ...
The good news for the loyal supporters of Miracle's Paw for Pets, a Carrizozo-based animal rescue operation, is that, as of Sept. 2006, it became an official nonprofit 501 (c) (3) entity. Right behind that giant step came the completion of a 20 foot by 25 foot exercise pen with a cement floor next to the animal control kennels west of Carrizozo. This pen allows the animals to get outside, get some exercise and enjoy interacting each other. The new pen was possible thanks to donations by the residents of Lincoln County, fundraisers held by Sunny Aris - KRUI, KIDX and KNMB - Heidi Hoffpauir of Thundering Paws Pet Resort in Alto and the Burro Serendade and Auction held by Joan and Warren Malkerson. Other successes listed for the 2006 report were: three dogs spayed and three neutered one cat and two kittens spayed, tested and vaccinated collars and leashes bought throughout the year for use by animal control MPFP's first program for children was presented to Rocking Horse Day Care Wal-Mart continues to donate dog food to the kennel, with volunteer Pete King handling the transporting from the Downs to Carrizozo.
Fast Food Chains Pull Calorie Data
New York diners curious to know how many calories are packed into the hamburger they just bought from White Castle or Wendy's are out of luck. The two popular fast food restaurant chains pulled posters listing calorie counts for menu items from the walls of their New York City restaurants and thus will avoid having to comply with a new mandate approved by the Board of Health that will affect thousands of New York restaurants. The rule, which goes into effect July 1, will require about 10% of city restaurants to post calorie counts beside food items listed on their menus. The measure affects mostly chain and fast food restaurants, but only those providing calorie information to customers on or after March 1. By removing any calorie information from their New York City restaurants before the legislative deadline, Wendy's and White Castle won't be held to the same standard as other fast food restaurants in the city.
Coach Insignia Captures First Prize at 'Motown Iron Chef' Cook-Off ...
DETROIT, Feb. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Local Detroit restaurant Coach Insignia captured first prize and $5,000 at the "Motown Iron Chef" cook off, which was sponsored by Chrysler, (Nachrichten/Aktienkurs) Jeep and Chrysler Financial. This is the first year of the "Motown Iron Chef" competition, which kicked off at the Detroit Winter Blast today. Coach Insignia's Chrysler Aspen Crab Cakes topped recipes from two other local restaurant chefs who competed in the charitable event. The "Motown Iron Chef" concept was similar to the popular "Iron Chef" television show. However, instead of the chefs creating a full menu around a pre-selected food, the chefs were asked to create a dish around a Chrysler Group-brand vehicle. The Chrysler Aspen, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and Jeep Commander were the three "menu" items used to spark epicurean creativity.
Jimmy's Food Store debuts wine room
DALLAS The day started with a persistent gust of wind from the south. El Niño was pushing the cold weather back north. This was going to be a "Big Night" for East Dallas. Jimmy's was inaugurating their back room, their circolo, with Tuscan vintner Andrea Cecchi and a group of Italian food- and wine-loving insiders. Mercedes, Volvos, and exotics lined the parking spaces in this urban-fusion neighborhood. It's a part of Dallas that has some of the best Asian food, along with an encampment of several Italians, herb-brujo Tom Spicer, a community garden frequented by Cambodian and Vietnamese farmers, and Latino and hip-hop locals who call this place home. Everyone gets along well, no one has major turf problems, and Dallas is a richer place because of it. The foodies started piling in early, Smart Cars and Dodge trucks alike, filling in the spaces.
