Quiessence is the best kept secret in Phoenix. Live music, cozy seating, amazing service, and the best food in Phoenix has kept me coming back for more. Every bite is literally FULL of flavor. Everything is either home grown on the farm or from the valley. I usually call in a reservation. "If I were leaving town and never returning I would eat at..." Why? Lucille's, is the best BBQ I've had. Great portions, great atmosphere and amazing taste. One coming soon to Tempe! "My favorite spot to share with insiders is..." Why? Zoe's, a nice place to hang out and relax with good conversation. "I hate to admit I eat here but I can't resist" LoLo's Chicken & Waffles. Lots of people make fun of me saying it's disgusting but I can't resist the sweet and salty flavors mixing together.

An inventive take on Asian cuisine
The Chinese year 4705, which begins Sunday, will be a time of joy and tradition in Asian communities. And for one young Asian cook and food entrepreneur, it is a time to put a fresh, healthful spin on celebratory meals. Ching He-Huang, author of China Modern (Kyle, $19.95), is rocking the culinary world with her vibrant, cutting-edge takes on classic cookery. This 26-year-old's passion for delicious, healthful Chinese food led her to create Fuge Ltd. (www.fuge.co.uk), which sells fresh cold salads (noodle, leaf and pasta) and Tzu beverages in the United Kingdom. With the recent release of her first cookbook, Huang's East-meets-West style is getting attention in the United States. "I want to explore modern Chinese cooking in hope of challenging conventional Western perceptions of Chinese food," says Huang.
Food for Thought: Cognito or incognito
The best part of Purim is the dressing up. Some would say it's the food, but after years of dieting and promising that by Pessah I'll fit into "that black skirt," I have changed my mind. Currently, I eye all those sweets and wonderful treats with suspicion. It has therefore been decided that the best part of Purim is the dressing up, and the great shame of it is, how few adults take part in the custom. Dressing up is not one of the four mitzvot we are meant to observe on Purim. In fact, concerning a holiday where little is mentioned in terms of obligations, dressing up isn't mentioned at all. From where does the tradition stem? I found two historical sources. First, in the 16th century, the Italian Gentile community would have their masquerades after Lent, which occurred around the same time as Purim.
And the amnesty award goes to J.Lo
Since we here at the People Column are only too happy to slag on Jennifer Lopez for any number of reasons (bad movies, mediocre records, entourages so large they get their own ZIP code), we should be fair and give the woman props when she earns it. And she has. Lopez will receive an award for her work as producer and star of a film examining the ongoing murders of hundreds of women in a Mexican border town, officials with Amnesty International said Friday. Lopez will receive the "Artists for Amnesty" award Feb. 14 at the Berlin Film Festival from Nobel Peace Prize winner Jose Ramos-Horta. The film "Bordertown" will make its debut Feb. 15 at the festival. In "Bordertown," Lopez plays an investigative journalist reporting on the serial killings of women in the border city of Juarez, Mexico.

Even though Japan has not been on the lunar calendar since the Meiji era, Japanese still participate in traditional celebrations associated with a time when they still lived by the lunar calendar. For example, many Japanese Americans, including my family, celebrated the Year of the Boar by making mochi, black beans, candied dried fish and mixed vegetables, for good luck and health for the rest of the year. Traditionally, this kind of food was made so that women would not have to cook for three days; hence, food was cooked in soy sauce to keep it from spoiling. This was a way for women to celebrate the New Year. The men celebrated by drinking sake and eating the food. While this is outdated in terms of gender roles, my family has always celebrated each New Year in this manner.
