| The Coming Storm
Dark clouds are converging over Americas economy. Here are three scenarios on how they could develop into a serious storm that could hit you. Fishermen and sailors must be constantly on the lookout and prepared for changing weather. Smooth sailing can quickly turn into a fight to keep one's head above water. Likewise, today's breadwinners must be prepared for abrupt changes in the economy. Good times can quickly turn into recession; high-flying stock markets can crash; and as history clearly shows, all bubbles eventually pop. Often, fat years are followed by lean years. As economist James J. Puplava has said, "Economic and financial conditions never remain constant. They are as seasonal as the weather. Forecasts change depending on the patterns that emerge" (Financial Sense Online, March 15, 2001).
Gift-Taking Habits to Become More Public at State Capitol
(KCPW News) Utahns will know a lot more about the gift-taking habits of their legislators next year if they take the time to check the reports lobbyists file. The Utah Legislature passed significant new rules to govern its gift-taking habits. Lobbyists will be required to report the names of legislators who take any tangible gifts that add up to a value of more than ten dollars in a day. Tickets to sporting events must be reported at any value. Food and meals only need to be reported if worth more than 50-dollars. The Legislature has long been reluctant to pass such restrictions on lobbying activities, but lawmakers appear to have been influenced this year by pressure from the Governor and the public to be more forthcoming with gifts they receive. VAT increase costs seven billion Euros to German companies
According to estimates by economists of the Deutschen Postbank the VAT increase will cost German companies about seven billion Euros in 2007 which is about 1% of the total amount of corporate earnings and unearned income in 2006. However, thanks to vibrant business activity the economy can easily cope with this, think the experts of the Deutsche Postbank. "Corporate earnings will increase strongly in 2007″, forecasts Dr. Marco Bargel, chief economist of the Bonner Bank. Furthermore, increased VAT does not burden all companies in the same way. Almost half of all the products and services consumed in Germany are exempt from VAT or a reduced tax rate is applied as in for instance the case in book trade, for food stuffs and in public local traffic. Here things have remained virtually unchanged.
