Triumph over empire

At 90 years of age, The Helena May still has the panache to keep up with modern Hong Kong. Vaudine England tells her story

Countless people have driven down Garden Road past an old colonial pile and never known what it was. Getting inside The Helena May, however, and discovering its great library and excellent dining is like finding the sexy underwear beneath a starched crinoline.

Similar contrasts prevailed at the recent 90th birthday party of The Helena May. Young girls in pink tutus performed to tinkly music, and club grandees wore feathered purple hats and frumpy florals.

Was this an outdated church fete which had got lost somewhere between England's southern counties and the exotic East?

But a glance around the crowded, high-ceilinged lounge was reassuring. Here were Hong Kong's leading professionals, female and male, Chinese and all sorts of "others."

Good food and cheerful ambience distinguish this unusual club of the colonial era, now thriving in modern Hong Kong.

Pipe-wielding man robs food delivery man

The victim told police he was delivering Chinese food to an address on Rose Avenue -- which turned out to be a vacant house.

A man came from the back of the house, however, and told the victim they'd have to go to another residence to get the money for the food, said police.

They went to an address on Willow Drive, about a block away, where the man produced what looked like a long, white metal pipe and threatened the victim, demanding his cash, police said.

The robber took approximately $50 cash and the food and ran away, said police. The victim was not injured.

The robber was described as a male in his mid-20s, approximately 5-feet, 7-inches tall, wearing a white hooded jacket.

Surprising Reasons Why We Overeat

Our minds, not our stomachs, control our eating habitsbut our minds dont always do a good job of making food decisions. Most people put on weight because their minds dont accurately keep track of how much they have eaten, not because they lack the willpower to put down their forks.

Surprisingly, when our minds tell us which foods we enjoy, its often for reasons that have little to do with how they taste.

Example: Approximately one-third of World War II veterans who served in the South Pacific love Chinese food 50 years later. A similar percentage hate it. It turns out that almost all the veterans who love Chinese food did not experience frequent heavy combat when in Asia, but those who hate it did. .

Wine Production at Fortino's is a Family Affair

As Gino Fortino returned to his rightful place of welcoming guests and serving his loyal customers, I strolled out of the tasting room into the light rain and looked around the event center. A beautiful centerpiece to this winery that was built in 1995, the Redwood Terrace has provided many brides and corporate entities a lush and tranquil setting for their weddings, receptions and special events.

I love walking in the rain. I like the feeling of rejuvenation and cleansing that it feeds my soul.

OK, that line is a crock of

----! I couldn't find anywhere to stand in the overcrowded tasting room that was filled with sweethearts enjoying the pre-Valentine's Day festivities of wine and chocolate, so my lonesome --- was getting soaked while I waited for the crowd to thin!

After a while, it did thin out and I approached the tasting bar to sample some more wine.

Students vote on food

University Dining Services and Gordon Food Service filled students' stomachs and warmed them up to spring break by throwing a food sampling luau.

Last night in the Union Multi-purpose room, each novice food connoisseur received a plate for sampling, a page of stickers to cast votes for their favorite items and a lei so they didn't stand out amongst the plastic palm trees.

Gail Finan, director of dining services, said the best way to provide students with what they want is to let them choose the items they would like to eat.

"We will be able to see very quickly what students want by looking at the stickers," she said. "Next year we will look at some of those items and make them available on campus."

Jeremy Lehman, a member of the food advisory board, said he thinks it is great that the students are also being given a chance to sample potential menu items, not just the food advisory board members.
