| Nutrition Month arrives with 34 tips
ATLANTA - March has been designated National Nutrition Month. It started out as a one-week celebration in 1973, but as people became more interested in food's role in health, an entire month was deemed more appropriate. In honor of 34 years of good nutrition, here are 34 tips to help you eat right, courtesy of the American Dietetic Association. 1. Keep your freezer stocked with frozen vegetables and your pantry stocked with canned vegetables to whip up quick, nutrient-rich meals. 2. Make pasta primavera and serve more vegetables than pasta. 3. Clean out your freezer and refrigerator by tossing half-used bags of vegetables or a lone carrot into homemade soup. 4. Use spinach instead of lettuce on sandwiches. 5.
Surprising Reasons Why We Overeat
Our minds, not our stomachs, control our eating habitsbut our minds dont always do a good job of making food decisions. Most people put on weight because their minds dont accurately keep track of how much they have eaten, not because they lack the willpower to put down their forks. Surprisingly, when our minds tell us which foods we enjoy, its often for reasons that have little to do with how they taste. Example: Approximately one-third of World War II veterans who served in the South Pacific love Chinese food 50 years later. A similar percentage hate it. It turns out that almost all the veterans who love Chinese food did not experience frequent heavy combat when in Asia, but those who hate it did. .
A Food-Stock Sampler
Mr. Market is a relaxed fellow these days. The Dow Jones index hasn't dipped by more than 2% for almost six months, share volatility is low, and economic growth has remained steady for as long as investors can remember. No wonder food stocks are attracting so little attention. As all Fools know, Mr. Market's moods can fluctuate considerably. But companies involved in the sale of processed and packaged foods and other consumer products tend to hold their ground during times of economic and stock-market uncertainty. That's because consumers must eat regardless of what phase we are at in the business cycle. There are only a handful of key domestic and foreign companies to consider in the food space. Years of acquisitions have led to a consolidated industry and a few dominant players that dominate the landscape.
Eat To Live: Are food agencies healthy?
WASHINGTON, March 1 (UPI) -- Remember the contaminated spinach health scare? How many of you are still suspicious enough of the stuff that you haven't gone back to buying it? Another incident has so far involved more than 300 people in 39 states who got salmonella poisoning from Peter Pan peanut butter and Wal-Mart's Great Value brand. The warning affects jars with the product code 2111, manufactured at ConAgra's Sylvester, Ga., plant. If we relied more on local producers we could look in the eye while buying their wares, chances are we would be less in danger of falling sick from food. (Of course, it would mean giving up peanut butter unless you made your own -- not hard with a batch of peanuts in their shells, a food processor and some nimble-fingered children, but time consuming).

Impact of FDA Warning Questioned in Suicide Rise
The data are disturbingchild and adolescent suicides rose from 2003 to 2004 after a decade of steady declines. What caused the increase? The number of suicides of youth under age 20 made a dramatic leap from 2003 to 2004, representing an increase of 18.2 percent. Many experts are questioning whether the increase is tied to a contemporaneous steep decline in antidepressant prescriptions filled for this population that began after the Food and Drug Administration issued its first strong warnings about the drugs' links to increased suicidality in March 2004. The increase is especially noticeable because "intentional self-harm," as the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines the category, was the only cause of death for those under the age of 20 to increase in rate between the two years.
STAWAR: Life is sweeter than chocolate
For me this last Valentine's Day was a milestone, It was the first that has passed since I was diagnosed with diabetes. Although I'm not a chocoholic, I do have an occasional weakness, for homemade fudge and hot chocolate chip cookies. But like who doesn't? And like most baby boomers I have been totally brainwashed by the Mars company into believing that Snickers must be part of any truly balanced diet. For most of high school, my lunch consisted of a Butterfinger and bottle of root beer. Home deliver rather than phone deliver
It is fantastic to see the increase in availability of all types of food in our local towns and areas. While we in Northern Ireland have our own food culture, and rightly so, we should be very proud of it, we shouldn't miss out on some other cultures ways of using many of the same ingredients. While we are very used to seeing a Chinese influence in our eating, it is an Indian dish I want to share with you today. I wasn't surprised to hear that the dish Chicken Tikka Masala is now one of the biggest selling chicken dishes of all time, which proves that, like this recipe of Creamy Chicken Malasa, such dishes have reached past the old realm of being available just for the lads coming home from a night out and have found their way to the family dining table and can be enjoyed by all.
