Why Migrate? It's Not For The Fruit

Science Daily — Why do some birds fly thousands of miles back and forth between breeding and non-breeding areas every year whereas others never travel at all? One textbook explanation suggests that eating fruit or living in nonforested environments were the precursors needed to evolve migratory behavior. Not so, report ecologists W. Alice Boyle and Courtney J. Conway of the University of Arizona, Tucson, in the March issue of the American Naturalist.

Kitchen Mailbox: How to deep-fry perfect fish

Deep frying fish is messy and not the most healthy way to eat fish. But once in a while...

Today's recipe was sent by Helen Lamison of Carnegie in response to a request from Stephen Hika of Cadogan, Armstrong County. Mr. Hika was searching for a seasoned, beer-battered fish recipe that can be used with various fish.

We used cod for its mild flavor and firm meat.

The recipe calls for quarter teaspoon of hot pepper sauce. We made a batch of fish with the hot sauce and one without. Our taste testers gave both versions a thumbs up.

Here are a few tips on deep frying:

Fish deep-fries quickly. When the coating is brown, it's likely the fish is done.

Do not heat oil until it smokes -- that's a sign the oil is breaking down, which affects the flavor.

Fry in small batches.

Iowa City, Mexico

A neon sign flashes the word open alongside a multitude of advertisements in fluorescent bubble letters. Upon entering the first set of glass doors I have two choices - to the right there is a grocery store and to the left a restaurant. I go right.

The smooth cadence of Spanish coaxes me through the aisles of the small store. I am in Mexico - or the closest thing Iowa City has to offer.

The Legaspi family moved their small Mexican grocery store, La Reyna, from Columbus Junction, Iowa, to their 1937 Keokuk St. location nearly two years ago. It was an opportunity to expand their business, and to supply the area's large Latino community with hard-to-find Mexican foodstuffs. Carmen Legaspi and her husband, Carlos, opened the adjoining restaurant just four weeks ago.

How to Snag that Crib

It's March. That means mid terms, spring break budget woes, and a senioritis that seems to hit everyone once the weaather is decent. But perhaps most nagging of all is the search for a first college home out of the dorms.

How to Snag that Perfect Crib- Guidelines for rent, roommates, location.

1) Remember your budget

Freshmen; ever miss that movie because you just couldn't throw down that $10 bill? Well, that's only going to get worse. Dorm life forced two deadlines for huge chunks of cash - the beginning of each semester. But after the aneurism those two bills caused you, you are pretty much clear from any money-related heart attacks. Life off campus, however, means anywhere from slight to significant pain at least every month. And the first of the month is a quick punch in the stomach that really blindsides you.

Smoke Out Delivery Dude for Fast Food

A knock on my door usually means one of two things: Either the Chinese food delivery man finally found my address, or my dealer wants to show off the latest Big Buddha strain he just got off some bro downtown for hella cheap. But unless Hermes is also sporting bloodshot eyes, I feel rude answering the door with a cloud billowing out of my living room. Smoking etiquette requires a sesh with my dealer for sure, but every time I'm handed my Kung Pao chicken, I wonder if a Trainwreck spliff would trounce my measly tip.

Once in a while, some mad dasher from Domino's will give my roomies and me a "Smells good in here" or a "Looks like I got here just in time." I used to just neglect the small talk for what it was worth, but I've come to understand how easy it is to include your meal ticket into the rotation.

Total Pig: Whole Foods Gets Bigger

On Feb. 21, Whole Foods made the unexpected announcement that they would buy rival Wild Oats, and my e-mail inbox overflowed with twitter and chatter from foodies near and far. Normally, I dont follow the fortunes of Fortune 500 companies, but this case is a little different. In fiscal year 2006, Whole Foods sold $5.6 billion worth of arugula, goat yogurt and fair trade coffee through about 200 stores in the US, Canada and the UK. Wild Oats sold $1.2 billion through about 100 stores in the US and Canada. No matter how much youve spent in either store in the past year (fiscal or regular), it may seem difficult to care which giant corporate entity gobbles up the other, but this news certainly means things will change here in Santa Fe, maybe for better and maybe for worse.

Whole Foods Market was founded as a little health foods supermarket in Austin, Texas, in 1980.

Gift-Taking Habits to Become More Public at State Capitol

(KCPW News) Utahns will know a lot more about the gift-taking habits of their legislators next year if they take the time to check the reports lobbyists file.

The Utah Legislature passed significant new rules to govern its gift-taking habits. Lobbyists will be required to report the names of legislators who take any tangible gifts that add up to a value of more than ten dollars in a day. Tickets to sporting events must be reported at any value. Food and meals only need to be reported if worth more than 50-dollars.

The Legislature has long been reluctant to pass such restrictions on lobbying activities, but lawmakers appear to have been influenced this year by pressure from the Governor and the public to be more forthcoming with gifts they receive.
