Kitchen cooks up family feel

The American kitchen has developed over the years from an enclosed one-room food- preparation and dining area to a central meeting place and an extension of the main living area of the home. This plan was designed with that in mind.

The family room, dining area and kitchen, each with features that complement the adjoining areas, are contiguous. Sliding glass doors welcome the outdoors via the covered rear patio into this large family and entertaining area.

The center work island in the kitchen is equipped with bar-type seating on the family-room side. There is a view of the big-screen TV and corner fireplace from the kitchen and dining areas. .

Low-fat dairy enhances weight loss in diabetics

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Research results suggest that a diet rich in low-fat dairy calcium boosts weight loss in overweight type 2 diabetics. "Such a diet should be tried in diabetic patients," researchers conclude, particularly in those individuals who have a tough time sticking to other weight loss diets.

The weight-loss promoting effect of dairy calcium came to light in ancillary analyses of data from a study in which 259 overweight diabetic patients were put on a mixed glycemic index diet, a low-glycemic index diet, or a modified Mediterranean diet.

Glycemic index is a measure of how quickly a food causes blood sugar, or "glucose," to rise. Generally, foods with refined sugars and simple starches, like candy and white bread, have a high glycemic index, while those with more complex carbohydrates and greater fiber content, such as vegetables and whole grains, have a low glycemic index.

Gift-Taking Habits to Become More Public at State Capitol

(KCPW News) Utahns will know a lot more about the gift-taking habits of their legislators next year if they take the time to check the reports lobbyists file.

The Utah Legislature passed significant new rules to govern its gift-taking habits. Lobbyists will be required to report the names of legislators who take any tangible gifts that add up to a value of more than ten dollars in a day. Tickets to sporting events must be reported at any value. Food and meals only need to be reported if worth more than 50-dollars.

The Legislature has long been reluctant to pass such restrictions on lobbying activities, but lawmakers appear to have been influenced this year by pressure from the Governor and the public to be more forthcoming with gifts they receive.

Pipe-wielding man robs food delivery man

The victim told police he was delivering Chinese food to an address on Rose Avenue -- which turned out to be a vacant house.

A man came from the back of the house, however, and told the victim they'd have to go to another residence to get the money for the food, said police.

They went to an address on Willow Drive, about a block away, where the man produced what looked like a long, white metal pipe and threatened the victim, demanding his cash, police said.

The robber took approximately $50 cash and the food and ran away, said police. The victim was not injured.

The robber was described as a male in his mid-20s, approximately 5-feet, 7-inches tall, wearing a white hooded jacket.

Milford group raising pet project funds

The private, nonprofit group is raising money for an addition to the city-owned shelter on East Broadway, and will hold a dinner-dance March 10 to help the cause. But that is only the latest effort the group has made to collect the $45,000 it needs to pay for a pet infirmary.

There are 2007 Milford Pet calendars, but only a few are left and at a discount price, said Marti Reed, who sells the item at her shop, The Canvas Patch on River Street. "It is such a good cause, and there are great dogs and puppies that need homes," she said.

What the animal shelter needs is space for isolating sick animals, particularly cats, said Patricia Liptak, the city animal control officer. "We have no place to quarantine them and a lot of the cats we take in have respiratory infections that we want to treat without spreading to all the other animals."

The rest of the new space would be used for storage for another Pound Pooches project, the Milford Pet Food Bank, Liptak said.
