A Few Thoughts On How To Think About Nutrition

[WARNING: I am not picking on anyone in particular, though chances are most everyone will be offended by *something* in this post.]

There are a lot of little sayings about how to eat that circulate in the popular culture. "Eat around the outside of the grocery store." "Eat only whole foods." "Don't eat anything processed." "Don't eat anything white."

Those sayings often have some wisdom, and for normal people who are just seeking to avoid the horror of the Standard American Diet, they're probably pretty good advice.

But I strongly believe that people pursuing CR owe it to ourselves to take a more nuanced view of nutrition. CR is hard enough in itself: lowering your calories below what your body *thinks* it needs is a process that takes focus, concentration, and information.

Expenses a drag on Del Monte
Del Monte Foods Co. reported a 10 percent drop in net income for the fiscal third quarter as expenses cut into gains from the pet products division. The San Francisco company with operations in Pittsburgh said net income was $46.5 million, or 23 cents per share, in the three months ended Jan. 28, vs. $51.9 million, or 26 cents, a year ago. In continuing operations, earnings per share would have been 22 cents, matching analysts' projections.

La Casita piles on the tamales

We adore fine dining. There's nothing like sitting comfortably, quietly sipping pinot noir and savoring edible art with myriad flavor and nuances. The portions are often modest, but the pricey mouthfuls are usually sigh-worthy.

Then there's yummy, belly-patting, m-m-m-m-good food you eagerly shovel in your mouth because it's so tasty.

We do not ponder whether the plate is half full, or half empty. These platters are piled, overloaded perhaps, with great, cheap fare that hits The Spot.

Those are the kind of fine, memorable happy-mouth meals we love to eat at Tamales by La Casita.

If you're a tamale fan like us, you've eaten the steamed, corn-husk-wrapped delights handmade by Denver's Sandoval family for the past three decades. You may have sampled them at any of the dozens of local Mexican eateries they supply with tamales or at their Invesco Field booth.

Hemp touted as a healthy food

Hemp growers want the Government to overturn food standards that are preventing them from establishing a food-product industry in Canterbury.

Industrial hemp, related to the cannabis-plant species, can be grown in New Zealand for oil-seed extraction, but regulations prohibit the rest of the low-THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) plant from being developed into a food product.

The major challenge facing hemp growing was the lack of consent to sell hemp-seed foods, said the director of Midlands Seeds and managing director of Oil Seed Extractions, Andrew Davidson.

The latter company had a licence to process hemp, but could sell only hemp-seed oil, he said.

Davidson said the hurdle would have to be overcome if the industry was to develop hemp's commercial advantage in crop production and justify the investment required to develop a fibre-processing plant.

Iverson '05 experiences Japanese culture as JET teacher

Since August 2005, University of Minnesota, Morris graduate Becky Iverson 05 has been a participant in the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET). The program, celebrating its 20th year, promotes grassroots international exchange at the community level by placing young graduates from over 44 different countries as English teaching assistants in schools throughout Japan. Iverson is in her second year of a two-year commitment. Through a question and answer session, Iverson, a native of Watertown, South Dakota, reflects on her experiences in Japan. Tell us about your work. As an assistant language teacher, I team-teach grades 7 to 12 English with a Japanese teacher at two high schools and a school for the deaf. I run an English club, judge speech competitions, run mock English college interviews, make presentations at JET conferences, and take sign language and Japanese classes.

Getting New Food Guide as Easy as Going to Store

In an effort to help the residents of Middlesex-London better plan nutritious meals and eat healthy foods, the Middlesex-London Health Unit is making it easy to get a copy of Canada's new food guide. The Heath Unit has obtained 60,000 copies of Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide, and is making the booklets available at supermarkets across the county and the city.

"The new food guide is a very useful tool when it comes to planning nutritious meals and ensuring that you get the nutrients you need to be healthy," says Heather Thomas, Public Health Dietitian with the Middlesex-London Health Unit. "We felt it was important to find a simple way to get this booklet into as many hands as possible - making it available when you're stocking up on groceries was a natural fit."

Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide is also available for download on Health Canada's website or by calling 1-800-O-Canada.

Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce - From the CEO

Imagine my surprise when a banker recently reported a lack of interest in targeting the hospitality related companies on Cape Cod. Instead, the banker wanted to target small businesses in the region. I didnt realize they were so different. In fact, what businesses of all types needs is the same. Good customer service, good market info and knowing who their customer is, smart marketing and a laundry list of hiring the right people, getting financing, effectively communicating and keeping staff. These needs are one of the driving reasons behind BizWiz. This years event just happens to have a bent toward the hospitality industry boasting a foodie theme dubbed Recipe for Success. So you dont think you need to be there because its related to our visitor industry? Heres an exercise for you.Try to think of a business that isnt impacted by tourists.
